DCIT21(Introduction to Computing) introduces students to the fundamental concepts, terminologies, and principles of modern computing.
The course provides a historical and conceptual foundation by exploring the evolution, generations, and classifications of computers.
Students gain an understanding of basic computer functions and the distinctions among data, information, and files.
The course examines essential computer components, including both hardware and software, with emphasis on operating systems, application software, and compatibility considerations.
Learners will study the Information Processing Cycle—input, processing, storage, output, and communication—and how these stages enable effective computer operation.
In addition, DCIT21 covers responsible software use through topics such as software installation practices, licensing, commercial software, and copyright issues.
Students are also introduced to number systems commonly used in computing, including binary, decimal, octal, and hexadecimal systems, as well as methods for converting between them.
